    Do Teslas Have Transmissions

    There is a lot of misinformation and uncertainty about Tesla. This is a pioneer in the electric vehicle space, which has raised a lot of skepticism from the public. One of the biggest questions is whether Tesla has a transmission.

    Does Tesla have a gearbox? In this article, I will answer this question. We'll explore the concept of a car transmission and tell you if Tesla has a transmission. But first, let's explain what a derailleur is.

    What is a transmission?

    The gearbox favors the gears under the hood. Cars can have more than 5 gears to help your car accelerate faster and coast more efficiently.

    Smaller gears (think 1st, 2nd, 3rd) are great for quick acceleration, however, they are not suitable for higher speeds.

    Big gears (4th, 5th, 6th, etc.) take longer to start, but they can handle more stress. Use larger gears at higher speeds.

    A derailleur is assembled through a series of increasingly larger gears. The gearbox will select the correct gear for the given speed and acceleration you are going to drive.

    When you drive faster, your car will use larger gears. In the case of a manual transmission, the driver will select the gear that suits them.

    The role of the transmission
    The role of the transmission is to convert engine power into usable motion. Without a transmission, no matter how loud the engine roars, it won't work.

    You can think of it as the link between the engine and the wheels. Of course, this is a crude oversimplification, but it helps the average person understand. The transmission transmits the wonderful engine movement to the wheels so your car can start moving.

    Does every car need a gearbox?

    Does Tesla have a gearbox? This is where things get a little tricky. I mentioned that a gearbox is essential if you want to transfer engine power to the wheels. Does this mean any vehicle with wheels needs a transmission?

    Let's take a bicycle as an example.

    If you know anything about cycling, you know that you pedal and the bike moves. This is done with a single cog or set of cogs close to the rear tire.

    On a single-gear bike, each pedal does the same amount of work and has roughly the same resistance on flat roads.

    If you have a 7-speed, then you have a ton of gears crammed together. The lowest gear has the lowest resistance, and the highest gear has the opposite.

    In this case, you can see what's going on inside the transmission. You also see a single gear to get the job done.

    Why are the motors different?

    This might not be breaking news, but Tesla's entire lineup is electric vehicles. That means you won't find an internal combustion engine (ICE) anywhere under the hood.

    The lack of a conventional gas engine means the transmission is different too. It all boils down to how the electric motor works.

    The motor makes one revolution very fast. In contrast, an internal combustion engine ignites a piston and goes through the process to burn fuel and generate energy.

    When the accelerator pedal is depressed, the electric motor spins. When it is pushed hard, it spins very fast.

    In fact, a typical Tesla can easily reach over 20,000 rpm. Compare that to the maximum safe rpm of a car engine (around 4,000-6,000 rpm) - we're talking about a difference of 3-5 times faster.

    Tesla's acceleration will be instantaneous.

    The power transmission is very efficient when the electric motor spins in this range. This is a more technical topic, but you've probably seen it in action. When you step on the gas in a gasoline-powered car going 30 mph, you feel the acceleration. The engine is more energy efficient at higher revs.

    The electric motor is basically the same power efficiency at any speed in its range.

    At 1,000 RPM, your Tesla produces as much torque as it does at 20,000 rpm.

    Now there's a big discovery: Tesla doesn't need more than one gear due to the facts just outlined. Unlike gas engines, they are energy efficient across the board.

    Motivation essentially works like a bike with a single gear. With only one gear, acceleration is felt instantaneously. I'm sure many people who have driven electric cars, including myself, can attest to this.

    Does Tesla have a gearbox?

    The answer to this question is a bit tricky. Technically, your Tesla has a single-speed transmission. However, this part looks and acts completely different from the transmission in a conventional ICE.

    The motor can safely accelerate at a certain rpm load, so don't worry about stalling.

    If you rephrase the question as "Does Tesla have a multi-speed transmission?", the answer is a clear "no."

    What they have is a single-speed gearbox that converts motor rotation into motion usable by the wheels.

    Find the right gear ratio
    Since electric vehicles only have one gear, it is important for car designers to enter the correct gear ratio.

    If you look at the gear ratios of a typical Honda Civic from first to sixth gear, you'll notice that the ratios have dropped. It goes from 3.6 to 0.7. For EVs, the gear ratio cannot be changed because there is only one gear.
