Polestar vs. Tesla Reliability - Which Is Better?
Jul 21,2022 | Chloe Lacour
Polestar and Tesla are currently among a relatively small group of automakers that only design and manufacture electric cars. This means that they are direct competitors that should be compared from various points such as price, range, practicality, brand appeal, and reliability.
Out of all these factors, the most important is reliability because without a reliable car one cannot enjoy all the other benefits that a given car offers. Therefore, in this article, we will compare the reliability of these two brands. So be sure to read on if you want to find out which of these two companies makes the more reliable cars.
Most Tesla models perform better than average when it comes to reliability because Tesla is still a relatively young company and invests heavily in autonomous driving, technology, and marketing departments.
On the other hand, Polestar is partly owned by Volvo, a company that usually achieves above-average reliability results. It's pretty safe to assume that Polestar models are just as reliable as Volvo models, which means Polestar should be the superior company when it comes to reliability.
Tesla reliability - average at best
It's a bit odd that a famous company like Tesla still struggles with reliability, but so do similar companies. Many technologies and innovation-driven car companies struggle to offer reliable cars because they are loaded with features that are more likely to fail.
It's easy to build a car with just four wheels and a steering wheel because there are fewer things that can go wrong. However, if you pack a car full of state-of-the-art features, you're likely to have more potential problems.
In any case, the Tesla Model 3 is a huge improvement over the Model S and Model X in terms of reliability. However, the latest Tesla Model Y isn't as reliable as the Model 3, although both are more or less the same.
All Tesla models come with a 4-year, 50,000 km warranty, which can be extended to 4 more years with free repairs.
Polestar reliability - better than Tesla
Polestar currently only has two vehicles on the market and the main one, the Polestar 2, was recalled even before it came to the US. However, that's the case with many newer cars and doesn't necessarily mean the car is unreliable, especially if the recall was successful, as in the case of the Polestar 2.
The Polestar models are constructed using many parts from the Volvo parts store, and Volvo appears to be a far more reliable company than Tesla. It is, therefore, reasonable to assume that the Polestar models should also be better than the Tesla models, but it is uncertain by how much.
In any case, we'll have to wait for more Polestar models to hit the market before making a reasonable assumption. Polestar models come with a 4-year 50,000km factory warranty, which can also be extended for a similar period.
Maintenance - a crucial aspect of reliability
Regular maintenance is necessary for all cars, regardless of whether they are classified as particularly reliable or absolutely unreliable. The problem with Tesla is that the company isn't exactly welcoming when it comes to parts and independent maintenance, which means a Tesla is expensive to maintain.
Even though electric cars do not require as much maintenance compared to internal combustion engines, they are very expensive to maintain. While it's true that electric cars don't wear out nearly as much as internal combustion engines, that's not always the case.
Polestar models should cost more or less the same as Tesla models in terms of maintenance. However, all cars need proper maintenance if they are to be reliable. So, be sure to do any necessary maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer.
Why are Teslas so popular?
Tesla has become the most valuable automaker on the market in an incredibly short period of time since the launch of the Tesla Model 3. Given that Elon Musk is the company's owner and the way Tesla is approaching the challenges, it's pretty easy to explain why Tesla cars are so coveted.
They offer a glimpse into the future and are appreciated by almost every car owner out there. When you combine that with Tesla's excellent charging infrastructure and industry-leading autonomous driving, it's obvious why everyone wants a Tesla.
Should I buy an electric car?
You should buy an electric car when you are able to fully use the electric car platform. This means you should be able to charge your car overnight in a safe and reliable environment. So if you drive mainly in the city and want to reduce your ecological footprint, you should consider an electric car.
However, if you're unsure about going full electric, you should first consider buying a plug-in hybrid, as it's the perfect stepping stone between an internal combustion engine and an electric car. Although you have to keep charging them, you are not dependent on the pure electric drive. This gives you enough flexibility and shows you whether you are ready for an electric car or not.
Is Polestar an electric Volvo?
Polestar is an independent company specializing in the manufacture of luxury electric cars, which means it's not an electric Volvo. Polestar was founded as an independent company because it allows it to build a specific brand image that fits the modern electric car philosophy, and that is sustainability and efficiency.
Volvo is still making electric cars and will continue to do so. However, the plan is to make electric cars so different that they can present a different market philosophy.
