    Where Are Tesla Electric Cars Made?

    Aug 08,2022 | Chloe Lacour

    Do you own a Tesla brand electric car or will you soon receive yours? Led by Elon Musk, the American automaker does nothing like the others, right from the manufacture of its models. By the way, do you know where Tesla electric vehicles are made? With its factories or Gigafactory, the brand is capable of producing more than one million cars per year from three continents. If you want to know more about the brand's production process or the origin of your electric Tesla, you've come to the right place! We take stock in this article.

    1. American gigafactories

    2. The Gigafactory Berlin — Brandenburg

    3. The Shanghai Gigafactory

    4. The essentials to remember

    The American Gigafactories
    The first Tesla factories were born in the United States and in 2022, there are 4:

    the factory in Fremont, California;
    the Gigafactory Nevada;
    the Gigafactory New York;
    the Gigafactory Texas.
    The latter was also inaugurated by Elon Musk last April. Be aware that not all factories have the same functions. For example, Fremont manages the production of the Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y, while the Texas Gigafactory is currently only responsible for the Tesla Model Y SUV. In 2023, it should also take care of the manufacture of the new Tesla models, namely the Semi, the Cybertruck, and the second generation Roadster.

    The Nevada plant is responsible for the production of electric motors, batteries, and powertrains. The Gigafactory New York is in charge of producing the Solar Roof, solar panels, and electrical components for the Supercharger charging stations.

    Since March 2022, Europe has hosted its first Tesla factory.

    The Gigafactory Berlin — Brandenburg

    Located in Berlin, Tesla's European factory opened in March 2022 after several postponements. Its objective is obviously to facilitate the transport of electric vehicles on the Old Continent and for the time being, this Gigafactory focuses on the production of the Tesla Model Y SUV.

    Similarly, the brand of Elon Musk indicates on its site that the German factory will also be used for the manufacture of batteries and, as we imagine, other models in the S3XY range. No longer dependent on American or Shanghai factories, deliveries of the electric SUV to the European market should now be faster, although the shortage of semiconductors affects the entire sector.

    If the Gigafactory currently covers 300 hectares, and intends to produce up to 500,000 vehicles per year, and employ 12,000 people, Elon Musk does not want to stop there and wants to make it even bigger. The goal? Producing more and more cars, of course, and supplying the European market.

    The Gigafactory Shanghai
    Let's end this overview of Tesla factories with the only one present on the Asian continent, the Gigafactory Shanghai, in China. Opened at the end of 2019, it is responsible in particular for the production of Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUV, but also the brand's batteries and its structure allows the manufacture of several thousand vehicles per month.

    If at the start the exported Tesla Model 3 came exclusively from the Fremont factory, since the autonomous 2020, the Gigafactory Shanghai also exports to Europe. When ordering, the manufacturer does not tell you where your electric sedan came from, but you can find out by checking the VIN number (vehicle identification number) indicated on the invoice or the certificate of registration. If the first characters are "5 YJ", the model is from the United States, while if the first characters are "LRW", the vehicle is exported from China.

    Before the Berlin factory opened, the first Tesla Model Ys marketed in Europe also came from the Chinese Gigafactory.

    You may not have known it, but the resumption of the epidemic in China has had a strong impact on the production of Elon Musk brand vehicles, which explains the numerous delivery delays and the increase in prices observed on the site.

    The main thing to remember
    With its factories spread over 3 continents, Tesla meets global demand and would then be able to produce more than one million vehicles each year. Obviously, the health crisis, the shortage of semiconductors, and the war in Ukraine affect Tesla, like other manufacturers and many sectors, but Elon Musk's brand is holding up. Indeed, the first quarter of 2022 was particularly good since 300,000 cars were shipped. A record for Tesla!

    You will also have noticed that the Tesla Model S and Model X are currently only produced in the United States, which explains why they are delayed in Europe. The American market is favored but is experiencing significant delays. You will then have to be patient if you want to become the owner of one of these models.
