Which Is Safer, Tesla Or Volvo?

    Jul 20,2022 | Chloe Lacour

Both Tesla and Volvo are top-notch when it comes to safety, but Volvo performs slightly better than Tesla.

Volvo has always been a benchmark for safety in the auto industry. The company has made a name for itself in the market for safety and reliability. Volvo started manufacturing cars to offer the best safety features to its customers. But Tesla has also proven that it makes extremely safe cars with top-notch safety features.

Car safety is essentially defined by how well a vehicle behaves in the event of an accident. Car safety is a major concern for many people, which is why modern cars are equipped with numerous advanced safety measures that include both active and passive safety features.

    Tesla Safety Ratings

Tesla is best known for its electric cars and Elon Musk, but its safety features are top-notch too. Tesla vehicles are regularly rated as safe by the IIHS, and several Tesla vehicles have also received 5-star ratings from the NHTSA. NHTSA ratings are based on crash testing on both sides of the vehicle.

The Tesla Model Y has always been a very safe car. It passed all NHTSA tests, giving it a 5-star rating. The Model Y is often considered the safest Tesla car. In 2021, the IIHS also included the Tesla Model 3 in the Top Safety Pick+ category.

    Tesla safety features

Tesla places great importance on safety when developing its vehicles and designs vehicles in such a way that the risk of accidents and collisions is minimized. The battery pack is housed in the lower part of the vehicle, which provides high protection against flashovers. Tesla vehicles also feature a patented side skirt structure that protects occupants in the event of a side impact.

Structural integrity is also excellent in Tesla cars. Since Tesla only makes electric cars, they don't have a motor in the front or rear. This allows them to add extra space in the front and rear, reducing the risk of injury to the occupants. Last but not least, all Tesla vehicles have very good airbags with side airbags and curtains.

    Volvo safety ratings

Swedish company Volvo has always been synonymous with safe cars. Since their inception, they have worked on security features.

Many non-profit organizations concerned with car safety have consistently rated Volvos very highly, giving them five stars. The NHTSA recently gave the XC90 full marks. And the IIHS classified the entire Volvo range as a Top Safety Pick+. The XC90 is considered one of the safest cars ever built.

Volvo only makes a small range of vehicles, but they ensure that all vehicles are the best when it comes to safety. Volvo literally focused its marketing campaign on the safety features and the importance of safety in the car.

    Volvo safety features

Volvo's reputation for safety wasn't built in a day. The company has worked hard to offer the best security equipment ever and even reinvented some security features from the ground up. Genuine Volvo safety features include booster seats, pedestrian detection, three-point seat belts, and a rear-facing child seat.

In addition to these features, Volvo has all the other standard safety features normally found in most luxury vehicles. However, Volvo takes them to the next level. Safety features available in all Volvo models include inflatable curtains, roll stability control, whiplash protection, electronic stability control, driver warning system, and lane departure warning.

Volvo vs. Tesla: Both are very safe, but Volvo is safer

Tesla had an average USN safety rating of 9.80/10. This makes Tesla definitely one of the safest automakers. However, Volvo, the safest and most reliable company, achieved a higher USN safety rating of 9.90 out of 10. Other safety organizations such as IIHS, Euro NCAP, ANCAP, and NHTSA all rank Volvo slightly higher than Tesla.

Ultimately, both brands are excellent when it comes to ensuring the safety of their customers. Volvo has a slight advantage over Tesla due to its long history of safety measurements. Volvo has been making the safest cars for decades. Tesla, on the other hand, is still new to the market and only started producing cars in 2008. So it may be that Tesla will one day overtake Volvo, but right now Volvo has the edge when it comes to safety.

    Are electric vehicles safe cars?

People are concerned about short circuits in electric vehicle batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are used in electric vehicles, which can be short-circuited if the battery is damaged. However, the probability is very low. They are comparatively safer than petrol-powered engines.

Another problem with electric cars is their range. Many people worry that their car battery could die when they are not at home, leaving them stranded. Yet even the cheapest electric car, the Nissan Leaf, has a range of around 150 miles, which is plenty for city driving. Just plan ahead to avoid draining your battery.

Can we add safety features to our cars?

It is possible to equip old cars with additional security features. Safety equipment is available in the aftermarket and can be installed in your car. Some of these upgrades are even cheaper than the built-in security options.

Which organizations are there for measuring vehicle safety?

There are several non-profit organizations dedicated to measuring vehicle safety, including:

    • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) - United States
    • Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) - USA
    • Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents - UK
    • Association for Safe International Road Traffic

How are the security tests carried out?

Several non-profit organizations conduct safety tests on every car model. The cars receive ratings based on their safety and accident prevention characteristics. These features are checked in strict test phases. The cars are tested in frontal, side, and rear impact tests.

The cars' safety features are then judged on their performance in the tests. The best-known organizations in this regard are the IIHS and the NHTSA.

What are active and passive safety features?

    Active security features
Active safety features are those that prevent an accident before it happens. These features have been added to maximize driver and passenger safety. These characteristics include:

    • Better adjustment of the driver's seat
    • vehicle center of gravity
    • Vehicle balance and driving behavior
    • vehicle weight
    • Better tire grip

Some safety equipment is also referred to as active safety features:

    • Anti-lock braking system
    • Electronic stability control
    • collision warning
    • Rear parking sensors
    • Passive security features

These are the features that protect the occupants in an accident. These features can save lives and include the following:

    • airbags
    • seat belts
    • laminated safety glass
    • Electronic pedestrian protection system
