    Do Electric Cars Have Transmissions?

    Aug 02,2022 | Chloe Lacour

“A significant difference between conventional vehicles and electric vehicles is the transmission. Simply put, most electric vehicles do not have multi-speed transmissions, instead, a single-speed transmission drives the electric motor.”

Transmission in the electric cars compared to conventional vehicles

For those who started driving with a manual, you should be quite familiar with the concept of gear changing. Whether the goal is rapid acceleration or efficient cruising, internal combustion engines only make efficient power in certain RPM ranges. Therefore, proper distribution of power through gear changes in the correct RPM range is required. Generally, the torque output is higher during low gears to move the car from a standstill. As the vehicle gains momentum, the torque gradually decreases. For these reasons, gear ratios are carefully calculated and set by manufacturers according to engine output to maximize efficient power in each gear.

This is not the case in electric cars. Electric cars do not require multi-speed transmissions due to the so-called electric "motor". While internal combustion engines require multiple gears with different power output ratios, electric motors produce a constant amount of torque at any given RPM within a specific range. Electric motors supply power instantly, which means that the process of building up torque through acceleration like in internal combustion engines is unnecessary. Automakers incorporate carefully calculated gear ratios to maximize the efficiency of the electric motor without having to shift through gears.

Additionally, most electric motors can run past 10,000 RPM with ease. Since electric motors are capable of generating such a wide RPM range compared to the 6,000 RPM redline of many internal combustion engines. A multi-speed transmission would only create inefficiencies like added weight and added production costs.
